Top picks

Classic Monopoly is the game everyone pictures: standard board, houses and hotels, dice, and an argument about Free Parking. This catalog files 207 editions here, which covers plain retail boxes, reissues of old artwork, premium wooden printings and a few boards that keep the classic look while changing one thing.

If you just want a copy for the house, the short answer is the current standard box.

How to choose

Monopoly: Classic Game with Storage Tray came out in 2025 and is the sensible default. It's the normal game for two to six players aged eight and up, with larger tokens and a tray in the box. Loose money and missing pieces are what kill a family set after a few years, so the tray earns its place.

Buying on nostalgia is a different question. Monopoly: The 1980s Edition from Winning Moves reissues that decade's artwork and components for two to eight players, and it's the closest current match to the box your parents kept in a hall closet. Monopoly Here and Now World swaps the Atlantic City properties for global cities while keeping the shape of the game.

A few Classic editions change the pace. Monopoly Knockout (2024) handles up to eight players in about twenty minutes, which makes it the one to reach for with a mixed table of kids and adults. Monopoly Chance (2023) and Hasbro Monopoly Speed both cut the running time. Monopoly Scrabble (2023) bolts word scoring onto movement, so you score a word and then move that far, and a full game runs under an hour. Worth knowing: the banking variants, including Ultimate Banking and the Electronic Banking sets, are filed under Party & Fast Versions rather than here.

Then there's the display end. WS Game Company prints Monopoly on wood and in bookshelf-style boxes, including the Luxury, Luxe Maple, Bianco and Grand Folding editions. Those are bought to be seen. At the opposite extreme, World's Smallest Monopoly (2021) is a functional palm-sized two-player set, better as a curiosity than as the house copy.

What's in this list

The 207 Classic editions are ordered by how well they sell, so the current retail boxes and the well-known reissues sit near the top and the obscure printings run underneath. Foreign-language versions are in here too, including Dutch and Swedish storage-box releases, and so are older Parker Brothers and Hasbro printings going back to a 1935 commemorative reproduction. Roughly forty percent of these boards also carry a Brands universe tag, since Hasbro's own line variants get grouped that way. Years show up where the listing data records one.

Common questions

What is the classic version of Monopoly called?

It's just called Monopoly, sold by Hasbro as the standard game. The current box in this catalog is Monopoly: Classic Game with Storage Tray from 2025, listed for two to six players aged eight and up.

How long does a classic game of Monopoly take?

Longer than most people plan for. If that's an issue, Monopoly Knockout (2024) is listed at about twenty minutes, Monopoly Scrabble runs under an hour for two to four players, and the Deal card game takes fifteen.

What's the difference between a deluxe and a standard edition?

Materials, mostly. Deluxe and premium printings use better tokens, thicker boards and nicer boxes, and the wooden sets from WS Game Company are built to sit on a shelf. The rules stay the same.

Which classic edition has the original artwork?

Monopoly: The 1980s Edition reissues the artwork and components from that era, including the classic tokens, for two to eight players. Parker Brothers also printed a 1935 Commemorative Edition that reproduces the earliest look.
